1  Overview 

 

GenRay  EXPLORER  is  a  GIS  powered  web-based  tool  that  facilitates  screening  and 
comparison of installed global power and gas infrastructure across the value chain. The tool 
also  provides  a  one  stop  solution  for  all  the  data  requirements  in  the  energy  industry  and 
presents the data in a standardized format. This data includes technical, operation and financial 
information of the existing energy infrastructure 

This document explains the GenRay EXPLORER application environment and the significance 
of all the widgets used.  

2  Environment 

Setting up GenRay EXPLORER environment is a matter of few clicks. 

1.  Use any web browser to land on Genesis Ray Website Client Area:

3  Widgets 

3.1  Layer List 

The  Layer  List  widget  provides  a  list  of  operational  layers  and  allows  the  user  to  turn 
individual layers on and off. Each layer (Some layers contain sublayers or subtypes) in the list 
has a check box that allows the user to control its visibility on the map.  

 

3.1.1  How to use 

1.  Click the Layer List widget in the app to display the layer list. 

2.  Click the Control all Layers button 

to control the behaviour of the layers in the list. 

You can turn the layers on or off and expand or collapse the layers. Alternatively, you 
can use keyboard shortcuts to do the same. Press Ctrl and check the layer check box to 
turn the layers on or off in the same level. Press Ctrl and click the arrow to expand or 
collapse layers in the same level. 

3.  Click the search button 

to find layers. 

4.  Click the close button to close the Layer List window. 

 

3.2  Base Map Gallery 

1.  The Base map Gallery widget presents a gallery of basemaps and allows the user to 

select one from the gallery as the basemap for your web application view. 

2.   Click the x in the upper right corner of the Basemap Gallery window to close it. 
3.   There are three types of maps available:

3.2.1  Grey Canvas 

This  layer  draws  attention  to  your  thematic  content  by  providing  a  white  background  with 
minimal colours, labels, and features

3.2.2  Imagery 

This  layer  presents  latest  available  low-resolution  satellite  imagery  for  the  world  and  high-
resolution satellite and aerial imagery, for most of the regions across the continents

.

 

3.2.3  Terrain View 

Terrain view uses the elevation contour lines to show the shape of the  earth's surface with a 
white background. Elevation contours are imaginary lines connecting points having the same 
elevation on the surface of the land above or below a reference surface, which is usually mean 
sea level.  

3.3  Chart 

The  Chart  widget  displays  quantitative  attributes  from  an  operational  layer  as  a  graphical 
representation of data. It allows end users to observe possible patterns and trends out of raw 
data. 

3.3.1  How to Use 

1.  Click the chart widget on the application. 
2.  Select a predefined task to execute the chart. 
3.  Make a spatial selection in the map using the current map extent or by drawing a graphic 

on the map. If the spatial selection results in a valid selection set, the chart automatically 
displays on the Chart Results tab when you click Apply

4.  Hover over each individual piece in the chart to display the category value and the field 

value and to highlight the corresponding feature on the map. Click each individual piece 
in the chart to zoom to the charted features on the map. When more than one type of 
chart is configured, click the arrows to browse through the individual types. 

 

5.  Optionally click the settings button 

 to change the chart display.

3.4  Location Finder 

The Location finder widget enables end users to find locations or search features on the map 
by typing

3.5  Query 

The  Query  widget  allows  you  to  retrieve  information  from  source  data  by  executing  a 
predefined query.  

3.5.1  How to Use 

1. 

Click the Query widget on the application. A list of queries is shown on the Ask Me 
tab.

 

2.  After clicking the predefined query, the widget will ask for input from end users to set 

the query criteria 

 
 

3.  After setting the criteria, click APPLY to run the query. 
4.  Features resulting from the query are highlighted on the map, the user must zoom into 

the asset  of interest  and click on the asset  icon or navigate using  arrows to  view the 
details of the identified infrastructure. if the layer has related data, the related records

are also included in the results. (Note: The user may not get the asset info pop-up table 
by clicking the placemarks/placeholders at a zoomed-out level)

In the query results panel

 

a.  Click Expand  all 

 or Collapse  all 

 to  expand/collapse  all  result  details 

displayed, and 

 or 

 for individual results. 

b.  Click the ellipsis button (...) to take actions on the results set as follows: 

i.  Zoom to 

ii.  Pan to 

iii.  Flash 

iv.  Show popup 

v.  Remove this result 

3.6  Select 

The Select widget enables you to interactively select features on the map and take actions on 
the selected features. 

The selection actions include the following: 

a.  Zoom to—Zoom to the map of selected feature 
b.  Pan to— Pan the map to selected features. 
c.  Statistics—Not available for a single feature. It only summarizes the field with numeric 

type. 

d.  Create Layer—Create a layer from a single feature or selected features. 
e.  Profile selected line- Show the elevation profile of the entire line (feature restricted to 

only line data) 

f.  Clear selection—Clear the selection set. 

3.6.1  How to use 

1.  Click the Select widget icon to open it. 
2.  Choose the layer or layers you want by checking the box. 

You can also make all layers selectable or de-selectable, or toggle layers select ability 
by clicking the button at the up-right corner of the panel, in line with

 

Layer.

 

3.  Hover over the Select button. You can Select By Rectangle with the following actions: 

a.  Drag the pointer on the map to create a new selection. 
b.  Press  the Shift key  while  dragging  the  pointer  on  the  map  to  add  selected 

features to the selection. 

c.

 

Press  the Ctrl key  while  dragging  the  pointer  on  the  map  to  remove  selected 
features from the selection

4.  Click Select and draw on the map to select features. The number (Count) of selected 

features display next to the layer. 

5.  Click the ellipsis (…) to open the Selection Actions menu

a.  Click one of the actions, for example, Statistics. Choose the field you want to 

see for the statistics. 

b.  Click Create Layer to create a new graphic layer on the map. You can turn it 

on and off in the Layer List widget. 

c.  Optionally click the rest of the actions

6.  Click X on the main panel to close the drop-down menu. 
7.  Alternatively click the number to display the list of features. Click the ellipsis () next 

to the feature to open the selection actions drop-down menu. 

 

a.  Click on actions as explained in 5.a 

8.  Click the Back button 

 to return to the main panel. 

9.  Click Clear to clear all the selections. 

3.7  Measure 

The Measure widget allows you to measure the area of a polygon or length of a line or find 
the coordinates of a point.

3.7.1  How to use 

3.7.1.1  Distance Measurement 

1.  Click the Distance button 

2.  Draw a polyline on the map by clicking two or more points. 
3.  Double-click to finish drawing the polyline. 

The  Measurement  widget  displays  the  total  length  of  the  polyline  using  the 
defined Default Length Unit. To change the length unit, select the applicable unit of 
measure from the Miles drop-down menu. 
 

 

3.7.1.2  Area Measurement 

1.  Click the Area button 

2.  Draw a polygon on the map by clicking three or more points. 
3.  Double-click to finish drawing the polygon. 
4.  The  Measurement  widget  displays  the  total  area  of  the  polygon  using  the 

defined Default  Area  Unit.  To  change  the  area  unit,  select  the  applicable  unit  of 
measure from the Acres drop-down menu.

3.8  Elevation profile 

This widget displays the elevation profile for a selected feature or a measured line along with 
a web map. 

3.8.1  How to use 

1.  Click the Elevation Profile widget on the application 

2.  In the Measure tab click the Distance 

button 

 

3.  Draw a polyline on the map by clicking two or more points. 
4.  Double-click to finish drawing the polyline. 

5. 

The Elevation Profile widget displays the total elevation profile result for the drawn 
polyline length 

 

 

6.  Click the ellipsis (…) to open the Selection Actions menu 

a.  Profile information: Gives the entire profile information 

 

b.  Prepare download: Helps the user to download the generated elevation profile 

as jpg file 

c.  Export profile data to CSV file 
d.  Flip elevation profile direction 
e.  Clear

3.9  AOI Download Widget 

 

This  allows  the  user  to  define  an  area  of  interest  (AOI)  and  analyse  specified  layers  for 
intersecting  features.  The  area  of  interest  can  be defined  through  a  by  drawing  on  the  map. 
Analysis results can be inspected in the widget and, optionally, download as a CSV file. This 
widget  consumes credits based on the number of features selected for download. Maximum 
area of interest allowed to be selected on map at a time is 500 sq.km. 

 

3.9.1  How to Use 

1.  Click the Download widget button to open it. 
2.  User  can  search  for  location  to  view  the  assets  on  the  map  (Just  by  typing  the 

state/district name) 

3.  Define an area of interest with one of the provided tools. 

a.  Draw—Draw  a  point  or  circular  polygon  on  the  map  and  optionally  apply  a 

buffer. If the selected area is more than 500 sq.km then a message will popup 
asking to select a smaller area after you click the REPORT option. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

b.  Click Start Over to remove the defined area of interest and create a new one. 

4.  Click Report to analyze the configured layers within the area of interest. Layers with 

data intersecting the area of interest report a total feature count, and results are presented 
by grouping unique attribute combinations with the following information: 

a.  Area of overlap when the area of interest is a polygon 
b.  Length of overlap when the area of interest is a polygon

5.  Along with this, the details of the download cost and credits available is shown. 

a.  Credits Available is the amount of credits currently in your account, allowing 

for downloads 

b.  Features  Selected  is  the  number  of  unique  features  intersecting  the  selected 

Area of Interest drawn on the map. 

c.  Cost is the amount of credits that will be deducted from your account based on 

the number of features selected. 

6.  The user can use the Choose attributes to display by clicking the below button

3.10  Near Me 

 

This enables a user to find & identify infrastructure within a buffer around a defined location 
and view detailed information and locations of the energy assets within the buffer zone. 
 

3.10.1  How to use 

1.  Click the Near Me widget icon to open it on the application. 
2.  Define the area you want to buffer by adjusting the slider to the desired number. 
3.  Search  for  an  address  in  the  search  bar  or  click  a  location  on  the  map  to  define  the 

location to be buffered. 

 

4.  The results will show features found within the defined buffer for each layer are listed, 

as well as a count of how many features belong to each layer. 

5.  Click a layer in the list of results and click the desired feature.

3.11  Draw and Save 

Draw and Save widget allow the user to draw simple graphics or text on the map and gives 
the user the option to export the graphic/drawing created in Json format. 

When the widget initially opens, a window appears that contains the following draw tools: 

1.  Point

3.  Polyline 
4.  Freehand polyline 
5.  Arrow 
6.  Triangle 
7.  Rectangle  
8.  Circle 
9.  Ellipse 
10. Polygon 
11. Freehand polygon

3.11.1  How to use 

1.  Click the Draw and Save widget to select the drawing mode 
2.  Optionally change the drawing style using the symbol picker 

a.  For points, select the marker category (different symbols are available in each 

category) to set the symbol size, color, transparency, outline color, and outline 
width of the symbol. Only the size field is available for picture marker symbols. 

 
 

b.  For lines, select a predefined symbol from the box. The user can also customize 

the color, style, transparency, and width of the symbol.

c.  For  polygons,  select  a  predefined  symbol  from  the  box.  The  user  can  also 

customize  the  fill  color, transparency,  outline  color,  and  outline  width  of the 
symbol. 

d.  For text, type in the Text box, and select a font color and size for the text. 
e.  For  TEXT,  type  the  text  to  be  entered  with  the  description  (user  can  also 

customize font color, size ,type ,angle and placement) 

 

 
 

3.  Optionally show a corresponding measurement in the map for the point location, line 

length, or polygon area or perimeter (customization is allowed).

4.  Draw the desired features and text on the map. 
5.  Once the desired graphic/text is drawn on the map, the user can  

a.  Zoom to the selected drawings 
b.  Copy the selected drawings 
c.  Export the drawings into your PC in JSON format 
d.  Import any drawing in JSON format 

 

 

 

6.  The user has the access to add custom image in the form of PNG, GIF and JPEG formats 

and can use as a marker/drawing on the map

3.12  Add Data 

The Add Data widget enables the user to add data to the map by searching for layers in ArcGIS 
Online or ArcGIS  Enterprise content,  entering  URLs  or  uploading  local  files  (csv,  shp  and 
kml).  In  this  way,  you  can  temporarily  add  layers  to  and  remove  layers  from  the  map

However, you can't save the layers to the map

3.12.1  How to use 

1.  Click the Add Data widget on the application 
2.  In the Add Data window, search for the data you want to add to the map. Click Add on 

the specific item. 
The added layer will appear in the Layer List widget as well. Click Remove to remove 
the  layer  from  the  map  and  the  Layer  List  widget.  Click Details to  get  information 
about the layer. 

a.  To add layers by URL, click the URL tab 
b.  Click Add to  add  the  data  to  the  map

The  following  types  are  supported 

through the URL: 

i.  ArcGIS Server web service 

ii.  WMS OGC web service 

iii.  KML file 

iv.  GeoRSS feed 

v.  CSV file 

vi.  GeoJSON file

 If you add a layer that has a spatial reference/coordinate system different from that of your base map 

(EPSG:4326), especially the tile layers, the added layers might not be visible.

3.  Click Sample URL(s)

 

to see the URL format for each type. 

4.  Click the File tab to upload files locally. You can either drag the file or browse to it. 

(Shapefiles  in  ZIP  format  as  well  as  CSV,  GPX,  GeoJSON,  and  KML  files  are 
supported) 

5.  To remove the layers added, click Layers in  the lower right corner of the widget. In 

the Layers panel, click the Remove Layer button 

 next to the layer to remove it. 

6.  Click Back in the lower right corner to return to the main panel. 

3.13  Dashboard 

This widget allows to the user to land on the separate operation dashboard incorporated 
within the GenRay Explorer. The entire dashboard interface is explained in Section4. 

3.14  3D  

This widget takes the user to the 3D application which provides a user with complete immersive 
experience  of  all  the  energy  infrastructure  in  and  around  existing  and  prospective  project 
locations in a 3D environment. 

3.15  Zoom Slider 

 

Click the zoom slider button              to zoom in or out on the map. 

 

3.16  Print 

The  Print  widget  connects  the  web  app  with  a  printing  service  to  allow  the  current  map  to 
print. 

3.16.1  How to Use 

1. 

Click the Print widget on the application

 

2.  Type a title for the map in the Map title text box. 
3.  Select the applicable Layout and Format for the exported map. 
4.  Click Advanced to open a menu with advanced print options. 

a.  Map scale/extent—Defines the method that the print service  uses to calculate 

the printed extent of the map.

Preserving map  scale causes  the  printed  map  to  maintain  its  scale  while 
recalculating  the  extent  around  the  existing  center  point.  Preserving map 
extent causes the scale to  adjust to fit the current map extent onto the printed 
map. You can also force a specific scale by clicking the Force scale option and 
providing a scale. Click current to populate the value with the present scale of 
the map. 

b.  Output spatial reference WKID

Defines the output spatial references of the 

print by specifying a valid well-known ID (WKID) 

c.  Layout  metadata—Allows  you  to  override  the  default  values  set  in  the 

configuration. 
Specify  values  for  the Author and Copyright properties  to  provide  current 
information to the print service. Check the Include legend check box to display 
the legend on the printed map. 

d.  MAP_ONLY  size—If  the  Map  Only  format  is  selected;  you  can  provide 

dimensions  for  the Width and Height properties  in  pixels.  Otherwise,  these 
values are ignored. 

e.  Print quality—Allows you to update the resolution of the printed map. 

Provide an updated value for the DPI (dots per inch) in the text box. 

f.  Feature  attributes

If Include  attributes is  checked,  the  feature's  attributes 

are included in feature collection layers. This is only applicable to custom print 
services that use the feature attributes, for example, to display a table of features 
and their attributes. 

5.  After  all  options  have  been  set  with  the  applicable  values,  click Print to  submit  all 

information to the print service.

3.17  Save Session 

The SaveSession Widget for ArcGIS Web AppBuilder enables users to save the current 
map settings into a session and restore them again later. A saved session includes the 
extent,  visible  layers  and  annotations  of  the  current  map. Sessions  may  be  saved  (in 
JSON format) and loaded from files so they can be shared with others using GenRay 
EXPLORER. 

3.17.1  How to use 

1.  Click the         widget to display the SaveSession panel 

 

2.  Once the user has the map as just the way required/wanted it - zoomed to the area and 

layers turned on, enter a name for the session and click the Save button. The session 
will be added to the Saved Sessions list 
 

 

 

3.  To return the map to the same state as when you saved the session, you can double-

click the title of the session to load the map. 

4.  Hover  over  the  Actions  column  for  a  session  entry  to  reveal  the  actions  that  can  be 

performed on the entry.

5.  Saved Sessions may be shared with other users or another browser on the same PC by 

saving the session to a file and then loading the session from the file into the session 
list. 

a.  To save a single session to a file, click the Download Map action for the entry. 

To save all sessions in the list to a file, click the Save to file link. 

 

b.  To load the sessions from a file, click the Load from file link to display the Load 

sessions from file dialog

c.  Click the Choose File button and select the file to load. The selected file must 

be a saved session file (Json format). All sessions from the file will be loaded. 
If a loaded session has the same name as an existing session, a number will be 
appended to the session to make the name unique. 

3.18  Full Screen 

The Full Screen widget enables the user to open the application in a full-screen mode. 

3.19  Show Map Overview 

The Show Map Overview widget displays the current extent of the map within the context of 
a larger area and updates whenever the map extent changes. The current extent of the map is 
represented in the overview map as a gray rectangle that can be dragged to modify the extent 
of the current view. You can expand or fold the widget.  

3.20  Feedback 

The  user  can  give  us  their  thoughts,  concerns  or  problems,  suggestions  to  improve  on, 
Questions etc

 

on the feedback forum attached with the application. The user can also explain 

the feedback in writing by providing the name and the email ID. Also, the user can upload files 
in  the  format  like  jpg,  png,  gif,  docx  for  describing  the  feedback/suggestions  however  the 
upload file size is restricted to a maximum of 20MB.

3.21  Legend 

The Legend widget displays labels and symbols for layers in the map. When the application 
starts, the Legend widget  is automatically enabled. Clicking the Legend widget  displays the 
Legend window. Clicking the x in the upper right corner of the Legend window closes it. 

 

 

Some key Descriptions 

1.  Identified Assets (Solar and Wind): These are the assets which are identified but not 

mapped with the database. The pop-up will display “Database Under Progress”. 

2.  Cluster wind Projects: These are wind project layouts which represents combination 

of multiple projects.  

3.  Estimated Wind/Solar Projects: These are projects which got missed as the identified 

assets.  Here  the  location  of  these  projects  are  not  exact  (WTG  wise)  but  accurately 
identified at a district level. 

4.  Solar plant vs park layouts: If there are multiple projects (different owners) within 

the  project  layout  then  it  is  termed  as  solar  park  whereas  solar  plant  (single  owner) 
represent individually mapped project. 

 

3.22  Previous/Next/Default Extent 

1.  The  Extent 

Navigate widget allows you to navigate the map to its previous or 

next 

extent. Click the arrows on the screen to navigate the map to its 

previous or next extent. 

2.  The  widget 

is automatically enabled when the app starts. Clicking the widget 

resets 

the 

map extent to the map's initial extent. 

 

4  Operational Dashboard 

The operational dashboard incorporated with GenRay EXPLORER enables the user to derive 
intuitive  insights  from  the  data  using  interactive  dynamic  visualizations,  including  simple 
numeric metrics, tables and charts.

4.1  Modules 

❖  The dashboard in GenRay EXPLORER has 6 different modules: 

 

1.  Home:  The  landing  module  of  EXPLORER  dashboard  with  the  default  view  of  the 

entire energy scenario (all fuel types) for the subscribed geography, however the user 
will have the option to select any country or multiple countries for analysis. 
Different analysis in this module includes: 

a.  Total installed capacity (MW) 
b.  Fuel-wise installed capacity mix (MW) 
c.  Fuel-wise installed capacity (MW) by commissioning year 
d.  Installed capacity mix (MW) at different administrative levels 
e.  Top 10 owners based on the installed capacity (MW) 
f.  Installed capacity (MW) by year of commissioning 
g.  Installed capacity (MW) by technology 

2.  Thermal + Nuclear: This module gives the complete analysis of Thermal and Nuclear 

power in the selected country/s. Analysis includes: 

a.  Total installed capacity (MW) and number of units 
b.  Fuel-wise installed capacity mix (MW) 
c.  Fuel-wise installed capacity (MW) by commissioning year 
d.  Installed capacity mix (MW) at different administrative levels 
e.  Installed capacity (MW) by year of commissioning 
f.  Map showing the installed units 

3.  Hydro: Analysis of hydro power in the selected country/s: 

a.  Total installed capacity (MW) and number of units 
b.  Top 10 owners based on the installed capacity (MW) 
c.  Installed capacity mix (MW) at different administrative levels 
d.  Installed capacity (MW) by year of commissioning 
e.  Map showing the installed units 

4.  Wind:  Wind  energy  scenario  of  the  entire  geography  can  be  analysed  using  this 

module. This also gives an overview of many key details like market stake of different 
operational  equipment  manufacturers,  wind  turbine  sizing,  wind  turbine  age  etc. 
Analysis include: 

a.  Total installed capacity (MW) and number of turbines 
b.  Installed capacity (MW) by manufacturer 
c.  Owner wise Installed capacity (MW) and count of wind turbines 
d.  Installed capacity mix (MW) at different administrative levels 
e.  Installed capacity (MW) by year of commissioning

g.  Size (MW) of wind turbines 
h.  Age of wind turbines

5.  Solar: Solar energy scenario for the region can be analysed:

6.  Transmission  Lines:  Power  transmission  scenario  can  be  deeply  analysed  in  this 

module: 

a.  Count of substation by Transmission voltage level (KV) 
b.  Voltage wise length of transmission (Physical km vs Circuit km) line  
c.  Top 10 owner wise transmission line length(cKM) 
d.  Installed line length (cKM) at different administrative levels 
e.  Installed line length (KM) at different administrative levels 
f.  Voltage wise trend of transmission line length(cKM) 
g.  Line length (cKM) by date of commissioning 

For each module, the user can also analyse scenarios based on

4.  Voltage levels (for transmission line module only) 
 

❖  All the analytics will change corresponding to the selection/s opted by the user which 

helps  the  user  to  analyse  different  case  to  case  scenarios  thereby  making  the 
dashboard more dynamic. 

❖  The user can export the summarized data from the charts by clicking the ellipses(...) 

button. 

❖  The user can also click on the different analytics on the dashboard and can see the 

changes instantly on all other charts/graphs according to the selection. Also the user 
is given permission to export the data/display the same as table 

    For ex: if the user needs to know the coal scenario in the country- India: 
 

a.  Select the country India from the Country list

b.  Click on Coal in the “Fuel- Wise Installed capacity mix” which will then get highlighted
